California-based Sutter Health is entering into a seven-year partnership with GE Healthcare designed to integrate artificial intelligence technology into its health system operations, the organizations said this week.

Sutter and GE expect the partnership will result in about $1 billion in revenue, according to Bloomberg.

Known as Care Alliance, the partnership centers largely on imaging services and access to diagnostic care across the state. Care Alliance would enable faster appointment scheduling, accelerate diagnostic imaging scan results, earlier diagnoses and offer more timely care, according to the companies.

WHAT’S THE IMPACT

Sutter Health said the alliance would enable it to more quickly acquire access to new equipment and technology, as well as an enhanced service delivery model.

The alliance will focus on a number of immediate goals, including expanded access to care, improved patient experience, more consistency regardless of care location, increased patient capacity, greater system integration and interoperability, and a timely refresh of needed equipment.

The first key focus area of the Care Alliance is an accelerated technology program across the Sutter Health system that will focus on AI-powered imaging technology, including PET/CT, SPECT/CT, MRI, CT, X-ray, nuclear medicine and ultrasound.

Imaging and ultrasound equipment will be implemented across the health system over several years, said Sutter.

The agreement would also include significant investment in Sutter Health’s workforce development programs to include ongoing training and education for technologists, nurses and physicians through Sutter Health University. GE HealthCare plans to assist Sutter in the design of a scalable workforce and talent development program that includes talent pathway community outreach, collaborations with radiologic technologist schools, and talent acquisition, development and retention, including leadership and clinical learning journeys.

THE LARGER TREND

In 2023 Sutter Health partnered with Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, California, expanding Sutter’s presence in the state.

Sutter said it benefits from Sansum’s expertise, its 102-year legacy and partnerships with local leadership and the community.

Sansum Clinic, also a not-for-profit system, operates patient care facilities in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, Lompoc and Santa Maria, California.
